Games Our Parrots Play
We shouldn’t really call them games; We're sure the parrots view them as life-saving activities us humans are too dumb to understand.
1. Gravity Check
My overall favorite is the Gravity Check. This is where a parrot pushes an object to the
edge of a table or counter and watches carefully as the object falls to the floor. There
seems to be no object too large or small for this, though objects that make noise are
common. I, for one, am thankful to my birds for providing this necessary reminder
several times a week.
2. The Invisible Object
Our parrots are excellent defenders of our homes. They see so many things we cannot.
I will often watch my birds watch without moving some invisible object for long minutes
at a time. When the invisible object has finally left the scene the parrots will look at me
to be sure I’m aware of how hard they work.
3. Combat
Combat, often to the death, is another frequent activity of parrots. The enemy can be a
toy that begs for destruction, though it can also be some “harmless” object such as a
wallet (preferably yours). The parrot always wins.
4. Paper Edging
Scalloped paper edging is a natural parrot talent. No book worthy of its title should face
the world with boring even-edged paper. Far better are the pages with semi-circles
chewed out for that sophisticated style. Lovebirds are the masters of scalloped paper
edging.
5. Wood Redesign
Finally, there is wood redesign. Parrots love to rearrange wood no matter where it’s found. A chair, an antique dresser, your chop sticks, a child’s wooden ruler are all potential beneficiaries for mighty parrot beaks of chomping.
Parrots are far more creative and useful than we give them credit for. They agree with
this sentiment and now think they deserve a large treat. I agree.
