Let’s talk about parrot pounds. Well, it’s actually parrot grams. We’ve all heard that parrots are great at hiding illness because they’re prey animals and have to appear healthy or else they could be eaten in the wild. Well, that’s true, but there are ways that we can catch many health issues early if we know what to look for. The first step is observing and knowing your bird well enough to know what their normal behavior looks like. In my opinion, that is the most important thing you can do to catch on that something might be wrong. Another important thing that helps is weighing your parrot regularly.
So often, people struggle to bond with their birds or their bird shows little interest in spending time with them. As a result, I have seen and heard the same question be asked over and over again. Let’s take a closer look at what people mean when they ask “How can I get my bird to like me?” and some possible solutions to some of the issues they are facing.
In May of 2019, I got a call from my local parrot rescue. The founder wanted to know if I was willing to foster a little 13 year old Green-cheeked conure named Noel. After some consideration, and a bit of persistence from the rescue, I decided I would help out. What I didn't know is that the years following would challenge me in new ways that would teach me about life, love, and perseverance.
No matter how experienced we are, or how much effort we put into giving our birds what they need, there is always more we can do to enrich their lives even further. I’ve compiled some things I believe all of us can do right now to instantly improve our bird’s quality of life. I invite you to try at least one!
